A notary public verifies your identity, witnesses your signature and applies an official seal so that other people, including government offices and foreign authorities, can rely on your document. Unlike a commissioner for oaths, a notary’s work is accepted outside Alberta, which makes it the right choice for anything headed to another province or country.

When you need a notary rather than a commissioner
If the organization asking for your document is outside Alberta, or asks for a “notarized” document or a “certified true copy,” you need a notary public. A commissioner for oaths can only administer oaths on documents used within Alberta and cannot certify copies.
Documents going to another country
Many countries also require an apostille or authentication after notarization. Canada joined the Apostille Convention in 2024, so the extra step depends on where your document is going. Bring the instructions you received and we will point you to the next step.
What to bring
- Valid government-issued photo ID showing your full name, date of birth and signature
- The original document, unsigned; you sign in front of the notary
- For certified copies, the original you want copied
- Any instructions from the organization that asked for the document
